Matthew Hill Appointed as Director of The Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research & Education

We are pleased to announce the appointment of , PhD, as Director of . The appointment is for a five-year term from March 1, 2026, to February 28, 2031.

I am truly honoured to step into this role and to lead such a dedicated and innovative mental health research community. I look forward to collaborating across campuses and with our community partners, listening carefully, and working together to advance our shared strategic priorities in ways that strengthen both research excellence and meaningful impact.鈥&苍产蝉辫;鈥 Dr. Matthew Hill

Dr. Hill's upcoming vision for the Mathison Centre encompasses the following:

To further enhance the unique strengths of the Mathison Centre to make it a local, national and international flagship Centre for mental health research with a focus on three specific areas:

  • Youth Mental Health and Adolescent Brain Development
  • Translating Preclinical Neuroscience to Clinical Research
  • Innovative, Non-Traditional Psychiatric Treatment Interventions

His vision is to highlight and expand research within these focus areas and to establish and build on existing partnerships within the community.

About Dr. Hill

, PhD, is a professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Cell Biology and Anatomy at the Cumming School of Medicine. Dr. Hill is also a Child Health & Wellness Researcher at the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute. He holds full membership in both the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research & Education.  

He serves as the inaugural chair of the and served as deputy director of the Mathison Centre.

His research focuses on endocannabinoid signaling and the neurobiology of stress, fear, and anxiety, and has published nearly 200 scientific papers in the field.

Dr. Hill brings to this role strong scientific leadership, a collaborative spirit, and a deep commitment to advancing mental health research and education.
