Popular professor and his wife want to include U荔枝视频 in their estate plans
Graduating from the University of Toronto, Norman Schachar made the decision to intern at the Foothills Medical Centre, which had recently opened.
So he borrowed his mom鈥檚 car 鈥 1967 Dodge Polara 鈥 and, despite never having travelled west of Windsor, Ont., gassed it up and aimed it at the prairies. 鈥淚 knew nothing about 荔枝视频,鈥 recalls Schachar, 鈥渆xcept the 荔枝视频 Stampede, the 荔枝视频 Stampeders, and Peters鈥 (Drive-In) hamburgers.鈥
That had been 1970. His original plan? To remain here for one year.
Instead, Schachar stayed put and created longstanding impact, producing a lifetime鈥檚 worth of contributions for the medical community in 荔枝视频. It鈥檚 a legacy that includes being a surgical resident at the 荔枝视频鈥檚 medical school in its very first year, co-founding the first osteoarticular bone bank in Western Canada, proposing an organized program of orthopaedic oncology that included limb-preservation surgery.
And, because he started running anatomy classes at U荔枝视频 while only a resident, his influence on local medical-school students is widespread. 鈥淎 whole generation,鈥 says Dr. Schachar, MD, professor emeritus, who taught until 2015. 鈥淎lmost all the physicians around 荔枝视频, they鈥檝e known me as their teacher at one time or another.鈥
He also found time to mentor Cy Frank, who became one of the world鈥檚 leading orthopaedic researchers. 鈥淎 major force,鈥 Schachar says of Dr. Frank, MD, PhD, who died eight years ago.
Professional legacy
And Schachar 鈥 whose r茅sum茅, with more than 100 published articles, fairly brims with achievement 鈥 is not done leaving his mark on the medical landscape.
He and his wife Kathryn have decided to feature U荔枝视频 in their legacy-giving plans.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not going to be millions 鈥 I鈥檓 just a retired professor, after all,鈥 says Schachar, chuckling.
鈥淥bviously, I don鈥檛 have a lot of money. But I thought it was a good idea to be an advocate 鈥 to do something to encourage orthopaedic education and research, like an annual prize for a resident or a medical student.鈥
For Schachar, giving is nothing new. A colourful presence, he detailed many of his adventures in his 2015 book, 鈥淭he Department: A Surgeon鈥檚 Memories 鈥 Before I Forget,鈥 the proceeds of which were donated to the Norman Schachar Education Fund of the 荔枝视频 Surgical Education and Research Trust.
鈥業鈥檓 pretty proud and I鈥檓 proud of the 荔枝视频,鈥 he says. 鈥淚鈥檇 like our family name to be somehow preserved, so people in medicine, going forward, would remember that name.鈥
He need not worry 鈥 the name continues to resonate. Two of Schachar鈥檚 daughters, Rachel and Jaime, are physicians. A third daughter, Leah, is a medical malpractice defence lawyer.
鈥淢aybe if they do well in their lives,鈥 Schachar says, 鈥渢hey鈥檒l be interested (in legacy giving), too 鈥 if I set the bar.鈥
