Postdoctoral researcher Dr. Rachel De Barros Oliveira, PhD, is a neuroscientist with a love for genetics.

While a doctoral student at McGill University and working at a podcast called , she booked , as a guest for an episode. Letourneau is a 荔枝视频 researcher and co-founder of 鈩 - a parenting program designed to support stressed parents build secure attachment with their children, leading to healthy child development.

Inspired by the conversation and Letourneau's studies, De Barros Oliveira, who was a graduate student at the time, felt a strong connection to the work.

鈥淚 told her, 鈥榊our program is exactly what people need.鈥 I was very interested in collaborating,鈥 she says.

Following the interview, the two began discussing potential research directions. De Barros Oliveira then applied for and was accepted into a postdoctoral position in Letourneau鈥檚 lab at U荔枝视频, receiving funding through the and Alberta Innovates Postdoctoral Fellowships.

鈥淲e already know that the ATTACH鈩 program works,鈥 says De Barros Oliveira. "My research focuses on understanding why it works, what biological and brain-based changes occur when caregivers receive the ATTACH鈩 program鈥檚 training. 鈥淎re there changes in the brain or DNA methylation patterns? That鈥檚 what we want to explore.鈥

As a postdoctoral researcher, she plays a key role in coordinating multiple components of the study. Her responsibilities include organizing the collection of blood and saliva samples from participants, scheduling MRI sessions, and analyzing complex datasets. She also contributes to scientific publications and helps translate the study鈥檚 findings into accessible knowledge for families and professionals. Additionally, she is also being trained as an ATTACH鈩 facilitator, allowing her to directly support caregivers participating in the program.

鈥淢y team and I are absolutely delighted to have recruited such an outstanding new scholar to our lab,鈥 says Letourneau, a professor in the Faculty of Nursing and at the Cumming School of Medicine.

"Her excellent neuroscience training, combined with her energy and enthusiasm, will propel our work forward to uncover the mechanisms to explain ATTACH鈩 positive impacts. Trainees like Dr. De Barros Oliveira are a tremendous asset to the 荔枝视频."

Parenting program

The ATTACH鈩 program is an evidence-based parenting program that helps parents learn mentalization and reflective function skills. These skills help them understand and reflect on both their own and their child鈥檚 thoughts, feelings, and needs which lead to secure attachment and support healthy child development.

鈥淚t鈥檚 amazing, one simple program can have a huge impact on people鈥檚 lives. I鈥檓 excited to see the changes on a biological level,鈥 says De Barros Oliveira. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an easy-to-deliver program that can be provided anywhere in the world and is adaptable to other cultures. It鈥檚 a tool that can really improve parent-child interactions.鈥

The program is delivered for no cost by many 荔枝视频 community partners, including CUPS and the Mustard Seed. The program is being delivered internationally in Brazil, Denmark and France.

Dr. Rachel De Barros Oliveira鈥檚, PhD, trainee work is funded through the One Child Every Child research initiative. She is one of six postdocs funded through the (OCEC) These awards are designed to foster a new generation of transdisciplinary child health and wellness researchers.  De Barros Oliveira also attained the prestigious Alberta Innovates Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Dr. Nicole Letourneau, PhD, FCAHS, FRSC is a Professor and Research Excellence Chair in Parent and Child Health in the Faculty of Nursing and a Research Professor at the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) in the departments of Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Community Health Sciences. She is a member of the CSM鈥檚 Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute(ACHRI), the Owerko Centre at ACHRI, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) and The Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research &Education at HBI.

One Child Every Child

Led by the 荔枝视频, the One Child Every Child research initiative works to dramatically improve the lives of children, their families, and maternal health across Canada.  The initiative is funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund with support from the Alberta Children鈥檚 Hospital Foundation and the Azrieli Foundation.
