U荔枝视频 alumni elected to Parliament in 2025 federal vote

Experts from diverse scholarly fields and regions of Canada will serve across two parties

As Parliament resumed following the April 28 federal election, 16 荔枝视频 alumni and former employees were set to represent Canadians in the House of Commons as newly elected or returning Members of Parliament. 

With their U荔枝视频 studies and experiences ranging from political science, social work and law to education, engineering and environmental design, as well as the ranks of administration, these MPs 鈥 representing both Conservative and Liberal parties 鈥 bring a wide range of experiences to Canada鈥檚 45th Parliament. 

鈥淭his is a proud day for our university when so many of our alumni, as well as former staff members, have achieved these seats of high influence in the House of Commons,鈥 says Dr. Ed McCauley, president of the 荔枝视频. 

鈥淲hen we see so many of our own participating in the highest echelons of public service and making a positive impact on our country, it really does reflect on the quality and value of a 荔枝视频 education.鈥

Master of Communication Studies, 2007 
Northwest Territories (Liberal)

A first-time MP, Alty, who was mayor of Yellowknife from 2018 to 2025, has also been named the minister of Crown-Indigenous relations. She is the first full cabinet minister with a portfolio to hail from the Northwest Territories. She鈥檚 also the first federal minister from the N.W.T. since 2006.

Surrey Newton (Liberal)

The co-founder of a land-surveying company prior to his election, Dhaliwal has been the MP for British Columbia鈥檚 Surrey Newton riding since 2015. He was MP for the Newton-North Delta riding between 2006 and 2008. He recently served as chair of the committee for citizenship and immigration.

Winnipeg South (Liberal) 

Duguid has been the MP for Winnipeg South since 2015. He has held numerous roles such as minister of environment and climate change, minister of sport, and minister responsible for prairies economic development Canada.

Falk has served as MP in her Saskatchewan riding since 2017. She has long been a member of the standing committee on human resources, skills and social development, and the status of persons with disabilities, and is associate shadow minister for labour.

Victoria (Liberal) 

An associate professor of international relations at the University of Victoria (on leave), Dr. Greaves鈥 areas of research include climate change and security. He was elected MP for the first time in the federal election.

A former television news journalist, Hepfner has been the MP for the Hamilton-Mountain riding since 2021. She formerly served as parliamentary secretary to the minister for women and gender equality and youth.

Now a first-time MP, Hogan was head of communications for the Alberta government, serving under two premiers, prior to joining the 荔枝视频 in 2020. Other career roles have included national director for a global communications consulting firm, chief strategy officer for a communications technology firm, podcaster and commentator.

Sydney-Glace Bay (Liberal) 

Before being elected as MP of Nova Scotia鈥檚 Sydney-Glace Bay riding in April, Kelloway served two terms as MP for the Cape Breton-Canso riding. Among other previous roles, he served as parliamentary secretary to the minister of fisheries, oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.

Kelly has been an MP since 2015 for the 荔枝视频-Rocky Ridge riding and now the 荔枝视频 Crowfoot riding. A former mortgage broker, Kelly鈥檚 roles in Parliament have included chairing committees on access to information, privacy and ethics, and serving as shadow minister for prairies economic development and as economic adviser to the leader of the Official Opposition.

Elected as MP of 荔枝视频 Midnapore in a 2017 byelection, Kusie has held the riding ever since. Among various parliamentary roles, she served as vice-chair of the committees on human resources, skills and social development, and the status of persons with disabilities, and is currently shadow minister for the Treasury Board.

Before his election in 2023 as MP for 荔枝视频 Heritage, Majumdar worked as a government adviser in foreign policy, international development and business. Other past career highlights include working as director of policy for Canada鈥檚 minister of foreign affairs, and as visiting foreign policy scholar at UBC.

Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke (Liberal) 

A first-time MP in her British Columbia riding, McLean was named secretary of state for seniors. McLean served as an Alberta MLA from 2015 to 2019, including time as minister of service Alberta and minister of status of women. As a lawyer, she represented both unions and employers, having spent three years as general counsel for a building trades union.

Leader, Conservative Party of Canada

MP for Ottawa鈥檚 Carleton riding from 2004 to 2025, Poilievre was elected leader of the Conservative Party in 2022 and served as leader of the Opposition. He lost his long-held seat in the 2025 federal election and is now slated to run in the Alberta riding of Battle River-Crowfoot in an upcoming byelection.

Elected five times as MP for 荔枝视频 Nose Hill and 荔枝视频 Centre North, as a parliamentarian Rempel Garner has also served as minister of state (western economic diversification) and parliamentary secretary to the minister of the environment. She is currently shadow minister for immigration, refugees and citizenship.

Airdrie-Cochrane (Conservative) 

Richards has been an MP since 2008 in the ridings of Wild Rose, Banff-Airdrie, and now Airdrie-Cochrane. Among his past parliamentary roles was serving as chief Opposition whip, chairing a committee for Aboriginal affairs and northern development, and vice-chairing a committee of veterans affairs. He is currently shadow minister for veterans affairs.

A first-time MP, Stevenson is a farmer and accountant, specializing in both personal and corporate taxes.

An MP in her riding since 2015, Vandenbeld has also served as parliamentary secretary to the minister of national defence and to the minister of international development. Before her election she promoted international democratic development in more than 20 countries. 

On the Alberta government front

It鈥檚 worth noting that 21 sitting members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta are U荔枝视频 alumni, including several high-profile leaders.

BA鈥97, was sworn in as premier of Alberta on Oct. 11, 2022, representing the riding of Brooks-Medicine Hat for the United Conservative Party. 

BComm鈥93, was selected as leader of the Alberta New Democrats on June 22, 2024. A three-time 荔枝视频 mayor, Nenshi has since been nominated as the NDP鈥檚 candidate in Edmonton-Strathcona and is awaiting a byelection to be called.

Three successive Alberta ministers of advanced education

BA鈥87, was sworn in as Alberta minister of advanced education on May 16, 2025. McDougall replaced BA鈥94, MBA鈥07, in the portfolio; Sawhney had served as minister of advanced education from June 2023 to May 16, 2025. Prior to Sawhney鈥檚 term, BA鈥05, also served as minister of advanced education from April 30, 2019, until June 9, 2023.

At the municipal level,  MA鈥03, PhD鈥14, is an alum of U荔枝视频. Before she was elected to City Hall, Gondek worked as an adjunct assistant professor and also served as director of the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies. Alumni city councillors include Ward 3 MSc15, MPP20, Ward 5 BA鈥05, BSc鈥08, and Ward 9 BA96, 惭贰顿别蝉鈥05
