The research landscape is evolving and, with it, the need to better support the scholars who drive discovery forward.
To strengthen support for postdoctoral scholars and remain a top-tier destination for national and global talent, the at the 荔枝视频 is introducing changes to its flagship postdoctoral funding programs beginning April 1, 2026.
What鈥檚 changing
To better reflect the university鈥檚 commitment to research distinction, the VPR Postdoctoral Excellence Award will replace the VPR Match Funding Award and raise the standard of support for early career researchers.
As part of this update, the Killam Postdoctoral Fellowship will no longer operate as a standalone competition. Instead, Killam Fellowships will be awarded to the top-ranked applicant in each VPR Postdoctoral Excellence Award competition, with applications accepted twice a year on June 1 and Dec. 1. Eligibility for both awards will be limited to postdoctoral scholars new to U荔枝视频.
What does this mean?
Beginning April 1, the minimum annual funding level for the VPR Postdoctoral Excellence Award will increase to $60,000, consisting of $30,000 from the Office of the Vice-President (Research) and a minimum matching contribution of $30,000 from the supervisor.
This increase reflects a changing national research landscape while ensuring postdoctoral researchers have the financial stability needed to focus on their work.

Stability that supports better research
For postdoctoral scholars, increased funding can shape the kinds of projects they are able to pursue.

Currently funded at the original amount through the VPR Match Funding Award, Dutta says funding has provided the sustainability to conduct fieldwork, analysis, and research outputs as she participates in a community-based research project exploring soil-based learning with immigrant youth and children at a community farm.
For , PhD, a postdoctoral associate in the who studies sanctions, cryptocurrency and ransomware, the Match Funding Award has created the flexibility to focus on research and invest in personal development.
鈥淚t allows me to dedicate more time to research and provides a bit of a buffer for activities like attending conferences or knowledge mobilization,鈥 she says.
"Increased funding allows us to take more risks. We can pursue interesting side projects that might not be core to our primary research because we aren鈥檛 as worried about the basic funding components.鈥
