The ranking of the world’s top 1,000 universities has been published this week by the . The ÀóÖ¦ÊÓƵ ranked seventh in Canada (up from eighth place in 2017) and number 196 in the world.

As one of Canada’s top comprehensive research universities, the ÀóÖ¦ÊÓƵ has consistently performed well in the CWUR ranking, placing in the top 200 in the world since 2014.

CWUR* uses seven objective and robust indicators to rank the world’s universities without relying on surveys and university data submissions. These include:

• Quality of education, measured by the number of a university's alumni who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals relative to the university's size (15 per cent)
• Alumni employment, measured by the number of a university's alumni who have held CEO positions at the world's top companies relative to the university's size (15 per cent)
• Quality of faculty, measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals (15 per cent)
• Research output, measured by the total number of research papers (15 per cent)  
• Quality Publications, measured by the number of research papers appearing in top-tier journals (15 per cent) 
• Influence, measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly influential journals (15 per cent)
• Citations, measured by the number of highly-cited research papers (10 per cent) 

  *The methodology has been enhanced this year, with research now accounting for 70 per cent of the total score.
