Robbery Prevention and Response

Report any incidents of robbery to the ÀóÖ¦ÊÓƵ Police Service at 911 and Campus Security at 403.220.5333. Robbery Prevention techniques differ, depending on the environment and situation, two strategies are listed below.

Prevent Personal Robbery

  • Know your destination and have a planned route
  • Report all suspicious persons or activity to Campus Security at 403.220.5333
  • Always remain aware of your surroundings
  • If someone suspicious approaches your vehicle while you are not moving, blow your horn and attempt to get the attention of others
  • Keep doors locked and windows up when driving
  • Keep your valuables out of sight
  • Always park in well lit areas
  • Always check the area around your vehicle and the surrounding area before exiting it
  • If using a bank machine always count money inside your locked vehicle or an area that will provide you some security
  • If you are the victim of a robbery consider calling the university counselling centre

Retail Store Robbery

  • Report all suspicious persons or activity to Campus Security at 403.220.5333
  • Prepare a robbery plan. This should cover everyone's role during a robbery. Assistance for this can be sought through Campus Security or the ÀóÖ¦ÊÓƵ Police Service
  • Know your neighbours. Make a point to get to know the other retail vendors around you
  • They will be more likely to look out for you should suspicious people be around and may be able to assist in the event of a robbery
  • Keep your store well lit. A well lit store makes it increasingly difficult for a perpetrator to disguise themselves
  • Implement a cash controls system. Make regular deposits and post signage stating there is a maximum cash value in the store at any time
  • In the event that you are robbed, comply with everything the robber instructs you to do. Do not argue, attempt to fight or subdue, and always take the threat of a weapon seriously — even if one is not visibly present. By doing everything you are instructed to do, you will give the robber a feeling of control, which will reduce the potential injury or death
  • During a robbery take notice of the suspects description and make detailed notes after the person has left
  • Call 911 and request the police. Have another co-worker call Campus Security at 403.220.5333, or do so yourself once you hang up with the police
  • After the robbery, lock your store and do not disturb anything the person may have touched.  There could be fingerprints or other evidence left behind by the robber that a Police Crime Scene Investigator will need
  • Campus Security will contact university Counselling Services to attend and assist those who witness the robbery
