Out-of-province student loans

Provinces handle student loans and grants. Your eligibility depends on the province you’re a resident of, not where you’re attending school.

If you live in a province or territory outside of Alberta, you must apply for funding through your province or territory of residency. For details on how residency is determined, review the following details from the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program.

Step 1. Check your residency

You’re considered independent if you meet any one of these conditions:

  • You’re 21 years of age or older
  • You’ve been out of high school for more than four years
  • You’ve been available for full-time work for at least two years since graduating high school
  • You’re married/common-law or are divorced/separated/widowed
  • You have at least one dependent child

If you qualify as an independent student, apply for your student loans in the province where:

  • You most recently lived for 12 months in a row while not attending post-secondary school full time, or
  • You currently live, if you’ve never lived in another Canadian province for 12 months in a row.

You’re considered a dependent student if you don’t meet any of the independent student eligibility criteria.

As a dependent student, you'll determine your province of residency based on where your parent(s) reside.

Step 2. Apply for student loans from your province or territory
