Emergency financial assistance
You may be eligible for an emergency loan or other funding resource. This support is available if you've experienced an emergency expense or unplanned situation out of your control.
Program information
To be eligible for emergency funding you must:
- Be a full-time UÀóÖ¦ÊÓÆµ student enrolled in the current term (9 units or more in Fall or Winter)
- Part-time students are considered on a case-by-case basis
- Not be a visiting student
- Show financial need
- Have no overdue fees or fines
- Have used all other available financial resources
- Have experienced a single, unanticipated emergency within the past 30 days (bursary consideration)
- Be in satisfactory academic standing in a previous academic year, if applicable (minimum GPA accepted is 2.00)
- Have experienced a financial loss/emergency within the last six months (loan consideration)
One application per student is accepted per academic year (Sept. through Aug.).
Emergency funding can't be used to cover debts from other university departments. This includes debts such as tuition, fees, library fines and Residence charges.
Student Emergency Loan (SEL)
The Student Emergency Loan (SEL) is a short-term, interest-free loan if repay by the agreed repayment date. The repayment date will be discussed prior to sign the loan agreement.. It's available to full-time students experiencing difficulties meeting essential living expenses. This includes paying for food, rent, an emergent medical expense or a one-time emergency expense.
SEL funding can't be used for credit card or car payments, insurance, non-essential expenses or university debts.
Apply for a SEL if you have a specific emergency expense and can repay the loan at a future date.

- Undergraduate students (domestic and international)
- Graduate students (domestic and international)
Visiting students aren't eligible for this loan.
Weingarten Undergraduate Emergency Bursary
The Weingarten Undergraduate Emergency Bursary supports undergraduate students facing unexpected, temporary financial need. Examples include theft, a car accident, an unexpected medical expense, and so on.
Apply for this bursary if an emergency or temporary financial need may prevent you from completing your studies.
Eligibility:
- Undergraduate students (domestic and international
Visiting students aren't eligible for this bursary.
Students’ Union Student Hardship Assistance Fund (SHAF)
The Student Hardship Assistance Fund (SHAF) supports students who demonstrate financial need. It’s a fund of last resort that provides financial help for unexpected circumstances. It provides short-term support to help the student continue studying at UÀóÖ¦ÊÓÆµ.
Apply for the SHAF if you’re facing financial need due to an unexpected/emergent circumstance. You must have exhausted all other forms of student aid before applying.

- Undergraduate students (domestic and international)
Visiting students aren't eligible for this fund.
UÀóÖ¦ÊÓÆµ Graduate Student Emergency Bursary
The UÀóÖ¦ÊÓÆµ Graduate Student Emergency Bursary supports graduate students with unexpected and unforeseen temporary financial need. Examples include theft, a car accident, unexpected medical expense, and so on.
Apply for this bursary if you have an emergent or temporary need that may prevent you from completing your studies.
Eligibility:
- Graduate students (domestic and international)
Visiting students aren’t eligible for this bursary.
Students' Greatest Need Emergency Bursary
The Students' Greatest Need Emergency Bursary supports undergraduate and graduate students with unexpected and unforeseen temporary financial needs. Examples include theft, a car accident, an unexpected medical expense and so on).
Apply for this if you have an emergent, temporary or unexpected need that may prevent you from completing your studies.
Eligibility:
- All students (domestic and international)
Visiting students aren't eligible for this bursary.
Students may receive funding for a wide range of unexpected or serious situations. Some common examples of emergent circumstances include:
- Medical emergencies
- Loss of employment/reduction in work hour(s)
- Family emergencies
- Theft and accidents
- Reductions in income support
- Student loan delays
Eligible students should apply even if their circumstance doesn’t fit the above examples. Please note that you can’t pay tuition or fees with emergency financial aid.
Undergraduate students
If you’re facing financial difficulties, contact an Enrolment Services advisor. They can discuss your options and next steps.
If you have a sufficient emergency, your advisor will refer you to apply for emergency financial assistance. You can then access the Undergraduate Emergency Funding Application accessible through your Student Centre.
Graduate students
Contact an Enrolment Services Advisor. They can discuss your options and next steps.
If your situation qualifies as an emergency, your advisor will refer you to apply for emergency financial assistance. You’ll then be provided a link to the application.
On each emergency funding application, students must state their financial resources and expenses. This is to determine financial need.
You’ll need to submit supporting documentation to confirm genuine financial need. We may request information/documentation after your application is submitted. For example, if your work hours were reduced, we may request paystubs showing the decrease in income.
The Student Emergency Funding Committee will respond to your application within three business days. If we request more information/documentation, you’ll have three business days to respond.
Successful recipients will be paid by direct deposit to their bank account. Disbursements are on the 10th and 25th of each month (or the preceding business day).

If you don’t have a Canadian bank account, please be sure to provide a Canadian address so a cheque can be issued.

FAQs
Emergency laptop replacement requests are considered for emergency funding. They're reviewed on a case-by-case basis. To receive a bursary reimbursement, you must submit a receipt for the purchase or repair costs.
Part-time students may be eligible on case-by-case basis.
Applications for most emergency funding resources are open year-round. We accept applications on an ongoing basis.
